Obituary of James Jarrell

James Burden Jarrell, 89 years old, passed away at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital on September 30, 2017. James was born on December 22, 1927 in Lizella, Georgia to Benjamin Richard Jarrell Jr. and Mary Lizzie (Wynn) Jarrell. Richard was a carpenter who often worked on his father’s property near Juliette, Georgia, now known as the Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site. Mary was a loving, dedicated wife and mother to her only child. James spent much of his childhood hunting and exploring the woods of his grandfather’s property and never forgot his family heritage. James served in the Armed Forces at the end of WWII with the Army and was honorably discharged in 1947. He married his beloved first wife, Marvell Roberson Jarrell in 1946 and were together until her death in 1997. They had two children, Jan and Sharon. James was a man of faith and joined, along with his family, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1963. His love of God would lead him to earn a Masters Degree in Theology from Brigham Young University. He worked for the Post Office for 24 years and became a Postmaster in Taylor, Texas. In 2003, James married his last wife Maritchu, who was a devoted spouse and caregiver in his final years. He lived at various times in Georgia, Utah, Texas, and most recently California. James was known for his sense of humor, loved fishing, woodworking, genealogy, studying scripture and singing. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
James is survived by his wife, Maritchu; daughters, Jan Smith and Sharon Staley; grandsons, Adam, Fenn, Jason, Jesse; granddaughter, Katie; great-granddaughter, Payton; sister-in-law, Vivien; and nephew, Arthur.
Private interment and the service to remember James will be on Friday October 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Santa Rosa Memorial Park; 1900 Franklin Avenue in Santa Rosa.
